POLITICAL AND SECURITY SITUATION IN IRAQ

Jordanian/Iraqi Border (Al-Karameh/Trebil)

Situation at this border is still unclear and risky. For the time being and until further notice, all shipments consigned to state companies and the government sectors are stopped. For other shipments consigned to the private sector possibilities are available but the border is still considered a high risk alternative.

Cargo blocked in Aqaba. Shipments in transit via Aqaba Port to Iraq are stopped and stored in Aqaba. Transshipments of cargo blocked in Aqaba to Iraq via Umm Qassr are available if permissions and alterations of transport routes are possible and authorized of involved authorities in Iraq. Turkish/Iraqi Border (Zakho/Ibrahim Al-Khalil Border)

The flow of cargo via Ibrahim Al-Khalil is almost back to normal but with higher security measures and more rigorous cargo inspection. The staff and customs people at the borders are only operating day time which is effecting longer waiting time for the trucks for crossing into Iraq and back to Turkey. Waiting time from Turkey to Iraq is approx. 6 days while the return from Iraq to Turkey is approx. 10 days. This upcoming situation is reflecting negatively on the freight rates from the Turkish ports and even on the direct land transports from Europe to Iraq.  This means shortage of trucks leading to increasing and unstable rates. All southbound transportation from the north of Iraq is totally stopped. Southbound shipments that already reached the Zakho border are offloaded and stored there until further notice.

Umm Qassr Port/Khor Al-Zubair Port                                                                           Operations at Umm Qassr and Khor Al-Zubair ports are running as usual. Transport from the ports to Baghdad and surrounding areas is also running as normal. Even here higher security measures have been implemented.

Syrian/Iraqi Border (Al Waleed) All shipments through this border are stopped.

Erbil & Sulaimaniyah The activities for both passengers and cargo freights are running as normal as possible.

BIAP, Baghdad International Airport
The airport is under the control of the military authorities. The activities for both passengers and cargo freights are running as normal as possible. Distribution of cargo to the city of Baghdad, the surroundings of Baghdad and south of Baghdad are as normal as possible.

Basra Airport                                                                                                                 Regular passenger flights are available. Airlines serving Basra (BSR):

  • FLY DUBAI (FZ)
  • ETHIHAD (EY)
  • EMIRATES (EK)
  • ROYAL JORDANIAN (RJ)
  • IRAQI AIRWAYS

These are passenger flights also carrying cargo as well. There is no regular freighter to Basra – this is case by case.
